Good morning Southside. Our daily devotional for today comes from Psalms 106:1-2:

“Praise the LORD! Give thanks to the LORD, for He is good! His faithful love endures forever. (2) Who can list the glorious miracles of the LORD? Who can ever praise Him enough?” (NLT).

This psalm begins with a reminder to the reader to praise the Lord. To give thanks to the Lord. Why? Well, it tells us that also. The Lord is good. The Lord is faithful. The Lord’s love endures forever. And if we even tried to list all the Lord has done we would run out of paper and ink. There is no way we can ever praise Him too much or enough, but we should try, don’t you think? Reformer John Calvin wrote these words:

“There is no man who has ever endeavoured to concentrate all his energies, both physical and mental, in the praising of God, but will find himself inadequate for so lofty a subject, the transcendent grandeur of which overpowers all our senses” (Source: John Calvin, Calvin’s Commentaries, 23 vols, Vol. 5, p. 207).

Calvin is right. Now as we read the verses above there is more to them than we see just in the English translation. For example, the Hebrew word translated as “give thanks” is [יָדָה, hodu] and based on the grammar here a better translation would be “testify, make known” the Lord. The point being we cannot sincerely come to worship, praise the Lord and not make Him known to others. Worship is solely about God. We are there for an audience of One – Jesus Christ. Why should we do this? These verses tell us.

The Lord is good. The Lord is faithful. The Lord’s love endures forever. And if we attempted to make known everything the Lord has done, we would not have enough time nor paper and ink. If you were to read this whole psalm, you would see that it lists how these attributes of God continued even when Israel was disobedient. Unfortunately, this psalm reveals our ingratitude and faithfulness to our God is always faithful to us.

This psalm also reminds us that we have the tendency to think that God’s favor to us is something we deserve, which we do not or that somehow we have merited God’s favor, which we have not. This psalm is about the Lord’s faithfulness to Israel and to us when we are unfaithful to Him. This is why we should be motivated to praise the Lord no matter what is going on in our lives.

Reflection Assignment: Take a moment and thank the Lord for His faithfulness to you. By this, name specific ways as praise and thanksgiving to the Lord for how He has been faithful to you. Now, reflect on a time you were not being faithful to the Lord but He was still faithful to you. Praise and thank Him for how He was.

Scripture To Meditate On: Psalm 104:1, “Let all that I am praise the LORD. O LORD my God, how great You are! You are robed with honor and majesty” (NLT).

Prayer To Pray: “Dear Lord I am so sorry for how I can go through a whole day and never praise and thank You for Your faithfulness to me. Lord, I am going to do this every day, even if I have to put a reminder in my phone to remind me to do it because You are worth it. I love You Lord. In Jesus’ name, Amen!”

I love you Southside! – Pastor Kelly
