Good morning and good day! We are following the reading for the One Year Chronological Bible and the selection of Scripture I have chosen is found in Psalm 25:8-10:

“The LORD is good and does what is right; He shows the proper path to those who go astray. (9) He leads the humble in doing right, teaching them His way. (10) The LORD leads with unfailing love and faithfulness all who keep His covenant and obey His demands” (NLT).

We say, “God is good all the time and all the time God is good.” The psalmist reminds us of this in today’s passage in Psalm 25. In these verses the psalmist reminds us that if we think we can figure out the right path all on our own, we are gravely mistaken. We may have an elevated or bloated opinion of ourselves, but the truth is – all of us are small in comparison to God. Think of it this way – if an ant is crawling on a boulder, it can’t really see where it is going, nor how much time and energy it will take to cross that boulder nor where they are going to end up  on the other side.

When our God in heaven looks down on us, He knows the path and the way we should go. If we really want to know, all we have to do is ask Him and He will tell us. A proud person assumes they know what God wants all the time, but a humble person knows they do not. So, they ask the Lord. The humble person says, “Lord, show me. Lord, teach me.”

It is amazing that David asks God to do this for him even as he is being inspired by the Lord to write Scripture for us today. Later, David mentions the sins of his past and he is writing this at the end of his life. He is not some young teen just learning to shave, but an old man reflecting back on his life. He knew his heart and the unfortunate choices he made and the horrible consequences that came from them. Meaning he knows his heart so well he knows what he is capable of doing apart from the Lord. This is why he has a humble attitude.

The older we become, especially if we grew up in the church, we have the tendency to think we no longer need God to open our eyes, to lead us, and to reveal his truth. This puts us in a dangerous place. The devil tempts us to rely on our pride and not on God. We think because we have been in a Sunday School or a Bible study group or a community group/small group for years, we know it all. Pride keeps us from admitting this and even now you may be bristling saying, “This is not me,” but what would the Lord say to you about this.

Let me put it this way: every single day of your life, are you more dependent on the Lord throughout the day or less? When you have to make major decisions, do you go to God’s Word and ask the Holy Spirit to tell you what to do OR do you just make a decision?

Jesus said this in John 17:17, Make them holy by your truth; teach them your word, which is truth” (NLT). The Christian who really wants to obey and honor the Lord has a passion to know His Word so they can glean wisdom from it for daily living. We cannot glean wisdom from God’s Word on our own. We must rely on the indwelling presence of the Holy Spirit. As you read it, do pray, “Holy Spirit, show me Your truth. Show and give me wisdom from God’s Word”? Do you or has your devotional time simply become a ritual you do rather than a relationship you are building? David wrote this in Psalm 25:5, “Lead me by Your truth and teach me, for You are the God who saves me” (NLT). This is a good prayer all of us should do every time we sit down with our Bibles to read.

Reflection Assignment: Rate yourself > On a scale of 1 to 10, how would you rate yourself on being dependent on the Lord every day throughout the day? Now, on a scale of 1 to 10, how do you think the Lord Himself would rate you on this? David in his old age is now a very humble man and he wants to end his life going out that way – being totally dependent on the Lord. How do you want to go out in the end?

Scripture To Meditate On: John 15:5-7, “Yes, I am the vine; you are the branches. Those who remain in me, and I in them, will produce much fruit. For apart from me you can do nothing. (6) Anyone who does not remain in me is thrown away like a useless branch and withers. Such branches are gathered into a pile to be burned. (7) But if you remain in me and my words remain in you, you may ask for anything you want, and it will be granted!” (NLT).

Prayer To Pray: “Dear Lord, I am so sorry that I live a life of depending on myself other than on You. I want to have a teachable spirit and a willing obedience to you. I want the scale of my dependence on You to increase more and more towards a 10. Thank You Lord. I love You Lord. In Jesus’ name, Amen!”

I love you Southside! – Pastor Kelly
