Good morning Southside! I am following the One Year Chronological Bible reading suggestion and any Bible verses you see highlighted in bold (ex. John 3:16), means it is a link to that verse. All you have to do is click on the reference and it will take you to the verse online. Our daily devotional for today comes from Luke 24:13-34. You know this story about the disciples who encountered the resurrected Jesus on the Emmaus Road.

We pick up where we left off yesterday where the disciples are in both doubt and confusion over the women’s testimony of what the angels had said to them, for the purpose of them to tell the remaining 11 disciples. We are told that two disciples of Jesus were on a 7-mile trip from Jerusalem to Emmaus when Jesus approached and joined them. Thinking Jesus was dead, and now in HIs newly transformed resurrected body they were prohibited from seeing it was Him.

The discussion they were having must have been intense because when Jesus asked them, “What are you all worked up about?”,they were shocked. “Are you the only one in Jerusalem who has no idea what things have happened this weekend?” And Jesus said, “What things?” To them, this was their 911. How in the world could anyone in Jerusalem not know about the events that had happened? How could anyone in America back in September 2001 not know about 911, right?

I can understand their shock. They were angry, in shock, in disbelief and still trying to come to terms with what had happened to the man they had followed and put their trust in when He was with them. They were depressed, saddened and frustrated that things had turned out the way it had, but that was Friday. They didn’t know that Sunday was coming the way it would.

They told Him. Then Jesus gave them a small rebuke and walked them through the Old Testament prophecies about how this was supposed to happen the way it did. They were hooked and begged Him to stay with them longer. And when it came time for dinner, Jesus broke the bread and blessed it and their eyes were opened and they knew, they knew it was the resurrected Jesus. They said in verse 32, “Were not our hearts burning within us while He was speaking to us on the road, while He was explaining the Scriptures to us?”

Luke offers no explanation how this opened their eyes that it was Jesus. Maybe it reminded them of when Jesus broke the bread when He fed the 5,000 men, not counting the women and children. Maybe they saw the scars on His wrists. We just do not know. The result was they went and shared with the disciples in Jerusalem – Jesus Is Resurrected. He is alive!

Reflection Assignment: When was the last time your heart burned as the Lord talked to you from His Word or by His Holy Spirit? When was the last time the Lord spoke to you that it moved you to go tell others?

Scripture To Meditate On: Jeremiah 23:29, “Does not my word burn like fire?” says the Lord. “Is it not like a mighty hammer that smashes a rock to pieces?” (NLT).

Prayer To Pray: “Dear Lord, I hope my heart has not grown cold to You and Your Word. Like these disciples on the Emmaus Road, I want my heart to burn with a fire that cleanses me of my sin and moves me to tell others. I love You Lord. In Jesus’ name, Amen!”

I love you Southside! – Pastor Kelly
